It’s always a pleasure to be asked to manage the two’s when Jay is away. A strong squad had been picked and an opposition on paper, weaker and there to beat. They struggled to get 12 down with the herculean effort of a two and a half drive from Enfield. This did lead to them rapidly departing and 2 extra pizzas being available. (NB chairman please can you arrange home games against very Northern London teams at home more often or order one more pizza..)
Anyway, into the game. The two’s lined up with the formation that they’re most familiar with – the 352. Charlie, me (rwb), Jalil, Ces, Ali, Sam T (lwb), Keaton (c), Connor, Matt, Robbo, Aaron (subs Rich, Cameron, Stuart)
Thorns started the game averagely. The initial minutes saw the balance of play in favour of the away team who were able to play passes right to left but without penetration. The midfield three were finding the same space and the steam coming through Keaton’s ears as we approached the 30 minute mark without making much of an impact. Then it clicked, the midfield were starting to find their areas and using the two up front and width given by me and Sam. Especially on the right, a cheating winger allowed me to basically play attacking right. The first goal came from Connor breaking behind the centre backs and drilling across the front of the goal and for the first time in three seasons, I scored! It was a well worked goal and from there chances started to flow but no second goal before half time.
Half time saw the introduction of Rich for Aaron and shortly into the second half Stuart for Jalil. Fair play to the lads, the second half was completely professional. Keaton fouled around the 50 minute mark and Connor stepped up, hit it over the wall and with a deflection it was 2-0. Not long after, another move this time on the left side saw Connor pick me out with a little chink into the box and a header (!) from 8 yards out proved too hot to handle and I had made it 3-0. The game was effectively dead and in a truly selfless act,I subbed myself off (wtf m8). Aaron added the cherry on the icing on the cake with his 45th shot of the game going in. It was the least he had deserved and hopefully one of many more this season.
Notable mentions to the new lads Cameron and Stuart who came in and were spot on.
