Old Thorns 6’s 4-2 Witan (03/02/18)

A late groundsman decision saw the 6s fixture against top placed Witan moved to the leaders’ homeground. This last minute change of venue would have thrown many a side off, but the 6s started well in testing conditions.

The game was evenly balanced before a whipped corner towards the backpost allowed Will to rise the highest and finish well, putting the 6s ahead. Wittan then woke up, hitting the post and missing a couple of opportunities. On the stroke of half time, following a mistake from the referee, Witan converted a free kick that caught a powerful gust of wind to go through the gap in Keeper Flavios hands….

Elliot’s passionate encouragement at half time meant the 6s rallied in the early stages of the second half and were rewarded with a penalty following a clumsy challenge from a nameless Witan defender on an unmemorable thorns striker. Ben stepped up with a composed penalty to take the score to 2-1. Not long after the gaffer score from distance to make it 3-1 with a sublime curling effort which saw keeper Flav leaving his box to celebrate with his side.

Witan, up to that point the highest scoring side in the league, then re-intensified their attacks and sustained pressure saw a flick on from a throw in converted at the backpost to set the game up for a thrilling final 10 minutes. With Witan pressing high up the pitch, a stunning thorns counter attack saw Bismarck whip a fantastic cross in for Jerome to head in from close range and finish the fixture off. The match ended 4-2, representing Wigan’s first defeat of the season, and was a just reward for Thorns’ application and commitment.
