Old Tiffinians 2-1 Old Thorns 6’s (13/01/18)
Having been recently freed from the brutalist regime of the Quinn dynasty, the 6’s skipped gleefully into 2018 with hope in their eyes; surely under Elliot’s watchful guardianship we will reach our football Elysium – second place in London South Div. 7. New year, new Kit, new Manager with a new Haircut – LET’S DO THIS!
Alas – it is the hope that kills ya.
Despite Tiffinians only having won two games this season, they shot out of the blocks and instantly put the OTs under pressure. A scrappy first half hour played out, and culminated in a cool finish from their striker, making the most of a fractious offside trap to spring through and slot Old Tiffs 1-0 up. Five minutes later, an innocuous looking cross from the right doubled their advantage – the OTs were still on their parent’s sofas scoffing mince pies, totally oblivious that Christmas was over and they were getting a pasting!
A bright end to the first half culminated in a couple of half chances for Nathaniel, but unfortunately we ended the half 2-0 down.
After mixing things up in the second half and adopting a more attacking 4-5-1 formation, the OTs began to turn the screw and dominate the game. ‘That big ginger chap’ made a break through midfield, and had a shot deflected wide after a crisp 1:2 with Bismark – and Elliot continued his fine run of scoring form by nodding in the resulting corner from Jerome.
Despite playing the rest of the game in their final third, and with notable efforts from StuJo, Elliot and Charlie, there was no huffing or puffing which would blow their door down – and the game finished 2-1. Only the 6’s second league defeat of the season – but a disappointing start to 2018 nonetheless.
We go again next week against Old Tenisonians in desperate need of three points to galvanise our second half of the season push for a promotion place.
